Congressman Larsen Visits Collapsed Bridge Site

SkagitBridge Collapse Photo by WSDOT

In a recent letter to the San Juan Island Visitors Bureau, Congressman Rick Larson noted that he had visited the site of the collapsed bridge on I-5 in Mt. Vernon earlier this week with the state and federal officials. “The state has a plan to temporarily repair the bridge by mid-June and fully repair it by this fall.” For up-to-date information on the repair progress, see the new Department of Transportation website created specifically for this issue.

In spite of the recent bridge collapse,  visitors to the island tell us that the Fir Road (Exit 221) detour is easy, not congested, and quite a pleasant route. Travelers may even want to slow down to “island time” as they wind through the peaceful Skagit Valley farm lands on this drive, and stop at a few farm stands featuring the local bounty. Full directions are available on our website.

Business is open as usual on all San Juan Islands.
