New Restaurant in Friday Harbor

Today I was able to escape the office to try out the newest restaurant in town, Tia’s Tacos. Tiny Tia’s Tacos is tucked away in the old Ellsworth Building (sorry, I couldn’t resist the alliteration) on Blair Street, between the Post Office and the long wall off Spring St.

There are a few rustic tables inside, and plenty of outdoor seating, though on drizzly days like today, that won’t be the most comfortable option. The simple menu is posted on the chalkboard, and includes 3 types of tacos for the day, quesadillas, and pupusas. The tacos are served in tiny, doubled corn tortillas, just like in Central America; my sweet potato taco was excellent, nicely seasoned and the potatoes were perfectly cooked. The cook patiently explained to me what pupusas are: fresh masa wrapped around the same filling as the tacos or quesadillas, but pounded flat and cooked as on a griddle or in a skillet. The chicken pupusa was delicious, and quite filling.

Currently open Monday through Friday, 11-5, this spot will definitely be added to my go-to list for fresh, tasty food.

It’s owned by “Pete.” I don’t even know his last name, but anyone who has been to the transfer station or the community theater will recognize his face. His main cook is from Guatemala, and she brings her skills and traditional cooking to your plate with tasty results. And who’s “tia” is it? Nobody’s really; it’s just that everyone has an aunt who makes the best tacos. Tia’s Tacos. Check it out.
