Use RSS Feed to Get San Juan Island and B&B News

We’ve now added the orange RSS feed icon on our blog posts for Tucker House Inn, Harrison House Suites, and Coho Restaurant. You’ll find it at the top of the right hand column. If you’d like to keep up on San Juan Island and B&B news, this is a real simple way to do it. In fact, RSS is commonly called “Real Simple Syndication” but it actually stands for Rich Site Summary.

orange RSS feed iconIf you’re not familiar with this, it’s a really cool tool to monitor blog entries, news headlines, job listings, personals, classifieds, audio, and video from all your favorite websites in a standardized format. The beauty of it is, you don’t have to keep going back to the websites to see if they’ve been updated; all you do is subscribe to the RSS feed on that website.

But first you need an RSS reader (also called a feeder.) There are a number of RSS feeders out there, Google Reader, iGoogle, Pageflakes, Netvibes to name a few. Many are free or offer free trial periods, others cost between $20 and $30 for the application, which of course gives you more tools and features within the reader. These will give you the freedom to categorize and organize your feeds, and they constantly update for you. Some readers will even suggest sites you might like, based on your categories. Many people who sign up for feeds make their RSS page their home page, the first page that renders when they open their Internet browser.

For more detailed instructions on the different types of readers available, check out Cnet.
