Upcoming Exhibitions at the IMA in Friday Harbor
This excellent museum is the perfect place to explore and get to know the San Juans, and it’s just a short ten-minute walk from the Tucker House Inn! Here are some incredible must-see exhibitions that will be coming to the IMA in the next few months.
1. Al WeiWei (January 23 – April 11, 2016)
The Fault Line is WeiWei’s latest exhibition that includes three pieces from the artists’ investigation of an 8.0 magnitude earthquake that killed over 60,000 people in Sichuan Province, China. The pieces feature eight sculptural coffins, a massive work of the names of all the students who died in the quake, and a video documentary of footage from the earthquake’s deathly aftermath. This exhibition gives visitors the rare opportunity to see the work of one of the top artists and political voices in the world.
2. Francisco Goya (January 23 – April 4, 2016)
Considered one of the most imaginative Spanish artists to ever live, Goya created works that utilize a variety of genres and formats. His exhibition, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, includes 16 prints that explore human nature, culture, and society, as well as difficult subjects like violence and ignorance. The pieces depict the artist’s’ despair during times of war and corruption and give audiences a glimpse of the inner workings of Goya’s mind.
3. Dana Lynn Louis (January 23 – April 4, 2016)
Known for her incredible large-scale installations, Dana Lynn Louis brings her latest exhibition, As Above, So Below, to the IMA. Like much of her previous works, this exhibition raises social and political questions and focuses on the Mali Civil War. Louis hopes that her exhibition, which includes a floor-to-ceiling drawing, suspended glass and mixed-media sculptures, etched mirrors, and video projections, will both intrigue and encourage people to live more humanely together.
