Walking San Juan Island: Zylstra Lake Preserve

Lake surrounded by fall folliage

The Zylstra Lake Preserve is now open for recreational use and island walkers are out enjoying the crisp fall weather and lovely farmland views the site offers.

There are two trail options, both of which connect with the parking area located directly off of San Juan Valley Road: a year-round trail that loops around approximately half the lake and a seasonal trail that completes a full circle. The latter is open from April to September, but then closes to protect migratory waterfowl habitat. Dogs are prohibited from all trails at this time, as well.

Welcome to Zylstra Lake
The trail offers beautiful views across the valley from start to finsh.

Paths are easily navigated and family-friendly (though leashed pets are only welcome on the trails from April to September in order to protect the migratory waterfowl).

The pastures and neighboring farms underline the importance of this land in the agricultural community. The management plan for the preserve outlines goals to protect and enrich the farmland under its stewardship.
