Here in the San Juan Islands at Tucker House Inn, we love our Southern Resident Killer Whales. They are an integral part of the local wildlife, and they are fun to watch from the shore or a sightseeing tour boat. Not only do they draw thousands of people to our islands each year but they also are major players in the ecosystem. If you’re a fellow whale lover, then you have your opportunity to give back to these majestic creatures! You can, in fact, adopt an Orca! How, you might ask? We’ll fill you in on the details!
Find out more about Southern Resident Killer Whales and the organizations that support them when you download our free Vacation Guide. You can learn about whale watching tours, the Whale Museum, and the Center for Whale Research. Then, it’s time to adopt an Orca!
How to Adopt an Orca
The Friday Harbor Whale Museum offers a chance for you to adopt an Orca! You can visit their website to pick out which individual Orca you would like to support throughout the year. The proceeds from Orca adoptions will support ongoing education, research, and public outreach on behalf of the entire Southern Resident Community of killer whales. Whales for adoption come from three pods (J, K, and L pods) and are both male and female. You can click on a whale photograph on the website to select your favorite Orca for adoption. You can also adopt an Orca in someone else’s name as a gift! This is a great idea for the holiday season as well as birthdays and anniversaries. If you’re adopting a whale for a child, parent, or grandparent, you can find a whale of about their same age to make the experience even more personal!
Adopt an Orca Packages
When you make the decision to adopt an Orca, you have several adoption options. You can opt for an individual adoption at just $35 a year. A family adoption is $60 a year and will include a 5×7 photograph of your whale’s pod in addition to other package items. The classroom adoption is then $70 a year and is a great option for teachers who want students to learn more about the conservation of underwater friends. All adoption packages include a personalized adoption certificate with a photo of your whale, a personal biography of your whale, a genealogy chart, monthly updates via email, and a one-year Whale Museum membership. Depending on the package, you can also get a certain number of Orca Steward patches and bumper stickers to display your dedication to conservation!
Visit the San Juan Islands
After you adopt an Orca, it’s time to visit the San Juan Islands to see some magnificent whales for yourself! You might even get an opportunity to see the very whale you’ve adopted! Plan a whale watching tour or look out from the shore at the Lime Kiln Lighthouse to catch some whale tails in the distance. During your whale watching adventures, we hope you make Tucker House Inn in Friday Harbor your home away from home. Our bed and breakfast offers a great concierge service to help you plan your whale watching itinerary!
