The Best Things to Do on San Juan Island With Dogs

Visiting the San Juan Islands with your dog is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience the laid-back charm and natural beauty of this Pacific Northwest favorite. Dogs are welcome nearly everywhere on San Juan Island, from scenic coastal trails to open-air restaurants and beachy stretches perfect for playtime. Whether you’re hiking through lush forests or grabbing lunch with a waterfront view, it’s easy to include your pup in the adventure.

The pace of island life is ideal for dogs who love exploring, too, and locals are known for being warm and welcoming to both two- and four-legged travelers. If you’re looking for dog-friendly San Juan Island experiences, you’ll find plenty of activities that ensure your pet is just as happy as you are. We’ve included a few ideas for your four-legged itinerary below!

Top Dog-Friendly Things to Do on San Juan Island

  1. There are plenty of dog-friendly beaches on San Juan Island. One of our favorites is Jackson Beach, just outside of Friday Harbor. It’s perfect for leashed beach walks and water play, and offers scenic views of nearby Lopez Island.
  2. Lime Kiln Point State Park is one of our favorite things to do on San Juan Island, and it just so happens to be a great place to enjoy with your pet. Here, you’ll find scenic trails, a gorgeous lighthouse, and some of the best onshore whale watching opportunities. Leashed dogs are allowed!
  3. The Roche Harbor Trails are a scenic place to do a little hiking, and dogs are welcome on this wooded trail network so long as they are leashed. In fact, most hiking trails on San Juan Island allow leashed pets, including places like American Camp, English Camp, Young Hill, and more.
  4. Leash up your pup and take the shore hike along the bluffs to the Cattle Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse is beautiful, but you’ll also enjoy panoramic water views on this dog-friendly trail.
  5. If you’re looking for a little free play for your pup, head to the Eddie and Friends Dog Park in Friday Harbor. The park is fenced and shaded, and is a great place for your dog to run off-leash and socialize.
  6. If you’re ready to take a break and grab a bite to eat, you’ll find plenty of dog-friendly restaurants in Friday Harbor. Grab a quick bite to go at Market Chef or enjoy their outdoor patio with your pet. You can also head to Friday’s Crabhouse or Downrigger’s, both of which offer dog-friendly patios and incredible water views. Your pups are also welcome outside on the patio at San Juan Island Brewing.

One more important piece of travel-related information for you is traveling with pets aboard the San Juan Islands ferry. The ferries are dog-friendly, so long as you follow a few rules. They can be kept in your car if it’s not too hot and conditions are appropriate, but they can also accompany you to the top, open-air deck of the ferry. They aren’t allowed in interior spaces on any Washington State Ferry.

Whether you stay in your car or step outside to take in the salty breeze, the ferry ride is a relaxed, dog-friendly way to start your island getaway. Once you arrive at the Friday Harbor ferry terminal, you’re just steps from shops, walking paths, parks, and your pet-friendly lodging at our Bed and Breakfast on San Juan Island, WA.
