Summer is the most popular time to visit the San Juan Islands, and the Washington State Ferry system can be a bit tricky to navigate if you’re new to it! The ferry system is a vital transportation network in the Northwest that connects the islands with mainland Washington state. Operated by the Washington State Ferries (WSF), it serves as the primary mode of transportation for residents, commuters, and tourists alike. You’ll want to book your Friday Harbor ferry reservation in advance for summer travel.
The San Juan Islands consist of 172 named islands and reefs located in San Juan County. However, only three main islands, namely Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan Island, are serviced by the Washington State Ferry System. Shaw Island does have ferry service, but there is not much for visitors at this stop. San Juan Island is the largest among the three, and it is home to Friday Harbor, which boasts a beautiful collection of local boutiques, specialty shops, restaurants, and attractions.
Perhaps before you make your Friday Harbor ferry reservation, you’ll want to secure your overnight lodging. Our Friday Harbor lodging property is less than half a mile from the ferry dock, making it the perfect place to stay during your visit to the islands. Whether you’re heading here for a family getaway (pets included), a romantic retreat, a friend trip, or a solo vacation, we have the perfect accommodation at our comfortable inn. Start planning for summer, and book your room today!
Friday Harbor Ferry Reservation & Things to do on San Juan Island
The San Juan Islands are a popular tourist destination, especially during the summer when the weather is mild and outdoor activities are plentiful. Visitors flock to the islands for whale watching, kayaking, hiking, biking, and exploring the local arts and culinary scene.
The ferry system experiences high demand during the peak summer season, particularly on weekends and holidays. The number of vehicles and passengers accommodated on each ferry is limited, and popular sailings often fill up quickly. So, securing your Friday Harbor ferry reservation in advance is essential!
Friday Harbor ferry reservations are released in three tiers to accommodate long and short-term planning for visitors and residents. The first 30 percent are released two months in advance, the second 30 percent are released two weeks in advance, and the third 30 percent are released two days in advance. The remaining 10 percent is set aside for those without reservations, allowing about 15 to 20 drive-up or standby spaces.
You must check in at the toll booth/ferry line at least 30 minutes before your sailing time, or you will lose your reservation and travel on standby. Bring your printed Friday Harbor ferry reservation sheet or confirmation email with the barcode to your phone for easy scanning.
Once you arrive at San Juan Island, you’ll be steps away from the best things to do in Friday Harbor. Head to our Inn, check-in, get settled, and then head out to explore!
