Have you ever thought of traveling to other islands, while staying in Friday Harbor? Grover has! We took a day trip trip to Orcas Island and had a fabulous time visiting Deer Harbor and Turtleback Mountain. Whether it’s your first trip to Friday Harbor or your 2nd or 3rd trip to the San Juan Islands, exploring other islands is quite easy, while staying in Friday Harbor.

Grover and I loaded up our bikes, bike trailer and hiking shoes and set off on the 8:30 am ferry bound for Orcas. We arrived with plenty of time to bike to Deer Harbor, hike Turtleback Mountain and stop by the Island Hoppin’ Brewery! We returned to Friday Harbor on the 4:25 pm ferry just in time for Grover’s dinner!

Taking the ferry for the day is easy from Friday Harbor. The ferry schedule favors Friday Harbor, so more times are available to us and our guests. If you are traveling by bike or foot the ferry is free. If you decide to take a car, which can be beneficial on this hilly island, it is free eastbound and $26.50 for westbound.

Deer Harbor is one of the less hilly rides on Orcas Island. The view of the harbor is a nice backdrop for lunch. Stop by Turtleback Mountain for a hike on your way to or from Deer Harbor. The ‘summit’ offers beautiful vistas and views. (Best suited for the intermediate hiker.) Island Hoppin’ Brewery is a fun place to relax and sample local beers and toast to a fabulous day!
