Beautiful Views & More at Lime Kiln Point State Park

Lime Kiln Point State Park is located on the western edge of San Juan Island, just a 15-minute drive from downtown Friday Harbor. By bike, you can expect the 9-mile trip to take around an hour, but it’s a beautiful journey across the interior roads of San Juan Island. The 41-acre Lime Kiln Point State Park is one of the most popular attractions on San Juan Island, and for good reason.

Lime Kiln Point State Park is considered to be one of the best land-based whale-watching destinations in the world. Between the months of May – September, you’re likely to see resident and transient pods of orcas, gray whales, humpback whales, and minke whales splashing just offshore from the park.

Apart from whale-watching, there’s plenty to see and do at Lime Kiln Point State Park. The area historically was used as a quarry for limestone, and Kilns were built to fire the limestone to produce lime. Next door to all of this, the Coast Guard operated the historic lighthouse, which was built in 1919. Lime Kiln Point State Park was created in 1984, and the Coast Guard still actively maintains the lighthouse, while the building itself is dedicated to Orca research and enjoyment by the public. There are scheduled lighthouse tours throughout the day.

There are 1.6 miles of hiking trails in the park, allowing further exploration of the area, and it’s also surrounded by 200 acres of public land which you’re welcome to explore as well. Lime Kiln Point State Park also happens to be a great place for birdwatching, picnicking, and just generally enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings.
