10 of the Most Fun Activities at the San Juan County Fair

san juan county fair The San Juan County Fair is a summer treat that is great fun for all! Taking place this year from August 17 to 20, the San Juan County Fair is where the San Juan Islands come together to celebrate the traditions and talents of the community! Prepare for some spectacular floral displays, homemade mouthwatering pie, and plenty of festive entertainment. Absorb the sights and sounds of the San Juan County Fair while exploring a variety of exhibits and demonstrations. Don’t miss out on this exciting annual event that brings so much joy to our island! Here are just 10 of the most fun activities and exhibits at the San Juan County Fair.

1. Zucchini 500

The San Juan County Fair is the place to be in the heyday of August, and one of the most traditional and fun activities is the Zucchini 500. The Zucchini 500 is a racing event that very much embodies its unique title. A handheld race car can be constructed with a zucchini, along with other household items that might benefit your speed and of course make your vehicle look good, such as Barbie dolls, guitars, CDs, and toy trucks. Then, let them go on the racetrack and hope for a win!

2. Flower & Produce Exhibits

Gardening and farming in the San Juans are incredibly popular, from backyard roses and peonies to fields of year-round vegetables. Stroll through the exhibits and check out the best of class of dahlias or the most exquisite fruits and vegetables. Admire some arugula and leeks along with strawberries and cucumbers as you explore the San Juan County Fair and move from food exhibits to art galleries.

3. Pie Tasting

At the San Juan County Fair, there are a lot of things to see and do, but the most delicious, by far, is indulging in some award-winning pie. Along with a bevvy of other fair fare, you can enjoy the most mouthwatering pies in the region.

4. 4-H Equestrian Events

Animals have a big place in our hearts and at the San Juan County Fair. One traditional series of spectacles is the 4-H Equestrian events. Be amazed at the grace and agility of these beautiful creatures as they navigate courses at the hands of their riders.

5. Animal Barn

Speaking of animals, you can pet some fluffy creatures yourself at the San Juan County Fair Animal Barn. Here, you will be able to see some local livestock up close and personal. From pigs and cows to rabbits and goats, pet some of your favorite animals!

6. Eat Your Fill of Elephant Ears

San Juan County Fair food is a good reason in itself to visit this year! You will be overwhelmed by the tempting smells of tasty treats throughout the fairgrounds. One of our favorites, and a true fair classic, is the elephant ear an irresistible mix of flattened dough, butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Yum!

7. The Rides

Maybe you’re headed to the San Juan County Fair for some thrills. Get your rush at one of the fair rides, from roller coasters to the traditional Ferris wheel and everything in between.

8. Learn Something New

With so many exhibits and demonstrations, the San Juan County Fair is a great place to learn something new. Whether you attend a cooking demonstration, learn about local produce, appreciate artists, or marvel at one of the many sideshows, we hope that you will learn something new during your adventure!

9. Beer Garden Bands

The San Juan County Fair also hosts a beer garden, where you can sit and drink your favorite brew while listening to some live music. This is a great retreat from the main hubbub of cotton candy and exciting rides. Take a relaxing break between the action and chill out at the beer garden.

10. Outrageous Trashion Fashion Show

The much anticipated Trashion Fashion Show is a sure highlight of the San Juan County Fair. Reusing global waste by turning it into a fashionable wardrobe is Trashion Fashion’s mission, and you will be amazed at some of the looks that walk down the runway. This year, the show will be followed by an ode by Beatles tribute band Paperback Writers!
