Whale Museum’s Marine Naturalist Training Program – May 3-25

imagesEver wanted to take a step toward working with the wildlife of the San Juans? Or would you just like to learn more about the amazing place we live and all the marine mammals that inhabit it? Check out the Whale Museum’s Marine Naturalist training program. The course is endorsed by the Pacific Whale Watch Association, a professional organization of whale-watching tour companies that abide by “whale wise” protective guidelines.

Dates for the spring program are May 3, 10, 17, 18, 24 and 25.  The summer program takes place from July 11th through 17th with a one-day break on July 14th .

The main focus of the training is the ecology, current status and conservation of Southern Resident killer whales and other local marine species as well as discussions about the marine environment.  The course includes presentations on cetaceans, pinnipeds, otters, intertidal invertebrates, marine birds, and other topics such as geology, marine conservation and current research projects.  Faculty includes Whale Museum staff, professional naturalists, marine scientists, and environmental educators active in the region.  Students will also participate in a variety of related field trips including the opportunity to practice their naturalist skills onboard a tour boat.  Tuition is $375 which includes an orca adoption and a Whale Museum membership.  There are no prerequisites other than high school graduation and a sincere interest to learn.

(On a personal note, your trusty blogger Libby took this course in 2011 and found it to be a totally wonderful experience!)
