Please Help Us Stay Green

The Tucker House Inn & Harrison House Suites strive to be stewards of the land and protect the island’s fragile marine ecosystem.

Living on an island makes us acutely aware of conservation in everything we do. We have implemented low-impact conservation techniques and partner with like-minded activity operators and purveyors. This collaborative spirit ensures the long term care of our precious environment.

As a green inn, we invite our guests to share in our philosophy of conversation during their visit. These practices not only make sense – but save cents.

  • Recycling throughout the inn and restaurant.
  • Purchasing energy star appliances for all replacement appliances.
  • Replacing wood-burning fireplaces with propane fireplaces.
  • Installing low-flush toilets, low water usage showers, and drip irrigation system for the gardens.
  • Using organic cleaners, hydrosols (the floral water from the distillation process of lavender essential oil), vinegar, and baking soda in lieu of highly scented fabric softener.
  • Stocking bathrooms with private-label handmade organic body products in refillable dispensers versus individual amenity bottles.
  • Replacing lighting with fluorescent and LED bulbs.
  • Asking our guests to partner with us in our conservation practices while on vacation.
  • Composting and recycling kitchen waste to local farms.
  • Encouraging guests to walk on the ferry and use public transportation or bicycles to get around the island. We provide guests with complimentary use of bicycles.
  • Supporting local merchants and business owners to reduce carbon footprint of importing supplies and ingredients.
  • Developing and fostering relationships with local farmers and fisherman to ensure the very best fresh seasonal and local produce, meats, fish, and cheeses available are served each day. Local farms provide us with free-range chicken and duck eggs and hormone-free milk and cream, delivered weekly by our “milkman.”
  • Growing herbs, edible flowers, and cut flowers at the inn for use in the guest rooms and for food preparation. Selecting sustainable ingredients for our menus.
  • Providing guests with filtered water to eliminate disposable plastic bottles.
Donating worn linens and bedding to Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center or San Juan Animal Shelter.
  • Donating used appliances, electronics, and furniture to island companies that recycle and resell them to islanders for nominal fees.
  • Donating used furniture to the Fireman’s Thrift Center instead of sending it to a landfill.

Water is the Island’s most precious resource

The unseasonably hot summer of 2015 caused 10 year lows in the Town of Friday Harbor’s reservoir. This heighten the Island’s focus on water conservation. Despite being surrounded by water, drinking water is precious. The town’s reservoir and dam are twelve miles west of downtown. Most households outside the town limits rely on wells. Some communities use rainfall catchment systems, purchase trucked potable water, or desalinate water from the straits.

In addition to the water conservation measures already in place at the Harrison House, we set out to do our part. We proactively changed our dish washing procedures, installed new faucets and replaced leaky toilets. In one month we were shocked to learn we saved 14,000 gallons of water between the Harrison House Suites, Tucker House Inn and Coho Restaurant. It made us realize that a few small changes in behavior can have a huge impact.

Thank you for helping do your part when you visit
