5 Delightful Washington Wineries Near Us
The San Juan Islands are likely on your list of places to visit, thanks to the seemingly endless access to pristine nature enjoyed here. However, it’s probably not on your radar as a great wine-tasting destination. It should be! Wine tasting in the San Juan Islands ranks right up there with whale watching, kayaking, hiking, birdwatching, boating, biking, agrotourism, and just enjoying some good old-fashioned downtime.
There are 45 exceptional Washington wineries in the Puget Sound AVA, five of which are right here in the San Juan Islands. These lesser-known Washington wineries pack quite a punch, though, serving up a range of cooler-climate wine varietals that pair delightfully with island cuisine. Wines common to this area include Riesling, Siegerrebe, Madeleine Angevine and Müller-Thurgau.
There are three wonderful Washington wineries right here on San Juan Island. They are San Juan Vineyard, Madrone Cellars, and Archipelago Wines. San Juan Vineyard produces Siegerrebe and Madeleine Angevine grapes, and it is situated in a historic schoolhouse overlooking a stunning chapel. Madrone Cellars produces wines from grapes that have been grown in Eastern Washington and made with minimal intervention, which results in wines that truly reflect the terroir in which they were grown. Archipelago produces a delicious range of wines that reflect the San Juan Islands with its relaxed energy and love of fresh, high-quality food and wines. Their specialty is sparkling wine.
Your next wine tasting journey involves a short inter-island ferry ride to beautiful Orcas Island, where you’ll find the Orcas Island Winery. The winery itself is located at the base of Turtleback Mountain, and they offer a wine garden experience that is quintessential San Juans. Beyond just offering great wine flights and wines by the glass, they also offer gourmet picnic-style food and locally made cheese & charcuterie boxes to enjoy in their rustic setting.
The third of the Washington wineries found in the San Juan Islands is Lopez Island Vineyards. This winery is only open by appointment on Thursdays and Fridays. It’s the oldest vineyard and winery in the San Juan Islands, and they specialize in various wines, including Madeleine Angevine and Siegerrebe. Like other local Washington wineries, they also feature delicious red wines made from grapes grown in Eastern Washington.
You’ll need more than a day to visit all of these incredible wineries, but it’s a great way to truly get a feel for the San Juan Islands. We recommend a minimum of two days to visit these wineries, with three days being even better, so you can thoroughly enjoy the top attractions on each island as well.
