3 Trails You Should Be Biking in the San Juan Islands

Biking in the San Juan Islands is a great way to explore the islands and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. We believe that two wheels are better than four here on San Juan Island at Tucker House Inn. With so much beautiful nature to see, take things a little slower so you can absorb it all. Along with a way of life, cycling is also a huge attraction on the island. The San Juan Islands are, in fact, considered a top-notch bicycling destination. From rolling hills and farm fields to glorious forests and shoreline vistas, the landscape is superb. When you peer into the distance, you can add snow-capped mountains to that list of breathtaking natural elements. Here are just a few of the best routes for biking in the San Juan Islands.

Roche Harbor Road

There are so many opportunities for hiking in the San Juan Islands and kayaking the San Juan Islands, but biking is also a popular activity. There are three major routes with road shoulders that depart from Friday Harbor to the aforementioned destinations. The Roche Harbor Road Route heads out from Tucker Avenue to the northern part of the island. This path for biking in the San Juan Islands ends at the Roche Harbor Resort and Sculpture Park. It extends for 9.2 miles and has a wide shoulder to make way for other four-wheeled travelers.

Beaverton Valley Road

The paved paths for biking in the San Juan Islands are preferred. There is no battling with rough terrain and tripping over tree roots. There is just a concrete expanse that continues around the island. While you travel on these paths from Friday Harbor, you will see some incredible scenery. Take in the meadows on the shoulder and the beautiful, lush forests that will surround you. Then, when you get a break in the brush, you will receive incredible views of the water surrounding the island. Gaze at mountain peaks in the distance and appreciate the wildflowers blooming beside your tire tracks. The Beaverton Valley Road path extends from Guard Street and turns into West Valley Road. You will pass English Camp at 8.2 miles and then intersect with Roche Harbor Road 1.3 miles later.

Cattle Point Road

Cattle Point Road will take you to the English Camp’s counterpart, the American Camp. This trail for biking in the San Juan Islands starts at Mullis Road and heads south 5.4 miles until you reach this historic landmark. At 7.4 miles, you will hit South Beach and enjoy the incredible beachfront panorama. At 9 miles, you will reach Cattle Point Lighthouse and DNR Interpretive Center. Be sure to soak in all that the San Juan Islands have to offer during your cycling adventure!
