Quick Kitchen Tips: Béchamel Sauce

Spoon full of béchamel sauce over a pot on a small stove

Whether you use it as a stand-alone sauce or as a base for a rich and delicious mac ‘n’ cheese, béchamel (or white sauce) is a great basic recipe to have in your back pocket.

Béchamel Sauce

2 T butter
2 T flour
Salt and pepper
2 c milk
2 bay leaves

Melt the butter in a heavy pot. Whisk in flour. Cook the butter and flour until you see the flour starting to bubble. Add salt and pepper. Add your milk and whisk continuously to incorporate. Add two bay leaves and continue whisking until you get a thick sauce that will coat a spoon.
